Surfing on the Gold Coast

🏄 The Gold Coast Superbank

The Superbank is one of the Gold Coast’s most iconic natural attractions and a world-renowned surfing destination. Stretching from Snapper Rocks through Rainbow Bay, Greenmount, and Coolangatta Beach, this incredible sandbank system creates one of the longest and most consistent right-hand point breaks in the world. Under the right swell and tide, surfers can ride a single wave for almost two kilometres — an experience that draws professionals and surf enthusiasts from across the globe.

Formed through coastal engineering and natural sand movement, the Superbank has transformed this southern stretch of the coast into a surfer’s paradise. While Snapper Rocks delivers the most powerful and competitive waves, Rainbow Bay and Greenmount offer more forgiving sections suited to intermediates. Even those who prefer to stay on shore can enjoy the spectacle from the nearby parks and walkways, watching surfers glide endlessly along the rolling walls. Whether you’re paddling out or simply soaking up the atmosphere, the Superbank captures the true spirit of the Gold Coast’s surf culture.

🏄 Beaches that form part of the Superbank:

  1. Snapper Rocks – The starting point of the Superbank and the most famous section. It’s known for its powerful, hollow waves and hosts international surf competitions (like the WSL Championship Tour).
  2. Rainbow Bay – Flows seamlessly from Snapper Rocks; offers slightly mellower, more user-friendly waves but still with long rides that can link all the way through.
  3. Greenmount Beach – The next section north; produces clean, rideable walls and is popular with intermediate surfers.
  4. Coolangatta Beach – The final stretch of the Superbank, where waves can continue to reform before tapering off into calmer waters.
  5. Kirra Beach – The Legendary Barrel. Not officially part of the Superbank, but when it links, Kirra offers deep, powerful tubes and world-class performance surfing. Rare, but unforgettable.

🏄‍♂️ Duranbah Beach (D-Bah)

Just over the Queensland–New South Wales border, Duranbah Beach — affectionately known as D-Bah — is a legendary surf spot that’s often considered an extension of the Gold Coast’s Superbank. Nestled beside Point Danger and just a short walk from Coolangatta, this beach is renowned for its powerful, peaky waves and vibrant surf culture.

Unlike the long, rolling point breaks of Snapper Rocks and Greenmount, D-Bah’s beach break produces short, fast barrels that challenge even experienced surfers. It’s one of the few spots that consistently works under a variety of swell directions, making it the go-to beach when the rest of the coast is flat. Its popularity also makes it a regular host for surf events and professional competitions.

Families and visitors will also find plenty of viewing areas at Point Danger Lookout, which provides sweeping views across the Tweed River, D-Bah, and the Superbank. While primarily suited for confident surfers, swimmers should note that conditions can be unpredictable — so it’s best to stay within the patrolled areas during lifeguard hours.

🌊 Access & Facilities

Duranbah is easily accessible from both sides of the border:

  • 🚗 Parking: A small beachfront car park off Duranbah Road with overflow near Point Danger Park.
  • 🏖️ Facilities: Public toilets, showers, shaded picnic tables, and beachside seating.
  • Nearby Cafés: Within walking distance at Coolangatta and Tweed Heads.
  • 🛟 Surf Safety: Patrolled seasonally — always check surf conditions and signage before entering the water.

Whether you’re paddling out to catch a world-class wave or simply soaking up the electric surf vibe from the headland, D-Bah perfectly complements the Gold Coast’s southern beaches, marking the seamless border between two of Australia’s most iconic coastal surf regions.
