Queenslandβs World-Class Wave
The Superbank is one of the most famous waves on earth β a long, sand-driven, right-hand point system stretching from Snapper Rocks through Rainbow Bay, Greenmount, and Coolangatta, and on rare occasions running all the way to Kirra. Known for its mechanical, fast walls and incredible ride length, the Superbank is a magnet for surfers from around the world and a defining feature of Queenslandβs surf identity.
Created through a combination of natural sand movement and the Tweed Sand Bypassing Program, the Superbank delivers some of the most consistent and exciting surf conditions in Australia.
πββοΈ How the Superbank Works
The Superbank forms when shifting sand builds along the points and gutters between Snapper Rocks and Kirra. During strong groundswells β particularly cyclone season β waves can peel flawlessly along the entire stretch, producing ride lengths of several hundred metres, sometimes over a kilometre.
The wave offers:
- Long, fast walls
- Multiple sections for turns
- Powerful, hollow barrels
- Consistent takeoff zones
On its best days, the Superbank rivals the worldβs greatest point breaks.
π Key Sections of the Superbank
Snapper Rocks β The Starting Point
A high-performance, heavy takeoff zone delivering fast, hollow barrels. Crowded, competitive, and world-class. Best for advanced surfers.
Rainbow Bay β Smooth & Friendly Walls
Where the wave mellows slightly. Long, peeling rights ideal for intermediates, longboarders (on smaller days), and progression surfers.
Greenmount β The Long Ride
Perhaps the cleanest and longest-running section of the Superbank. Smooth, rolling walls perfect for style surfing and long rides.
Coolangatta Beach β The Link to Kirra
Fun, rippable walls that occasionally connect all the way to the Kirra groyne during exceptional sand build-up.
Kirra β The Legendary Barrel
Not officially part of the Superbank, but when it links, Kirra offers deep, powerful tubes and world-class performance surfing. Rare, but unforgettable.
