🔵 Surfing at Honeymoon Bay
Honeymoon Bay is a picturesque, half-moon northern bay tucked between Cape Moreton and North Point — offering fun, semi-sheltered beachbreaks and occasional point-style peelers on east swells with west offshore winds. It delivers shorter but rippable lefts and rights (up to 1-1.5m), with shifting sand and rock influences creating unique sections in a secluded, scenic setting near Champagne Pools. A favorite for adventurous surfers wanting uncrowded waves, dolphin sightings, and stunning bluffs — less exposed than the full eastern stretch but still raw and rewarding.
Ideal for:
- Intermediate surfers enjoying fun, variable beachbreak and point waves
- Small-to-medium swell days (knee to head high) with east direction
- Forgiving, shorter rides in a protected bay with scenic surrounds
- Secluded sessions blending surf with picnics, walks to North Point, and wildlife
Always check rips (strong in channels), shifting shorelines, and currents — can get hazardous near rocks; not patrolled and access via 4WD tracks. Best in cleaner conditions; watch for sharks like elsewhere on the island.

Sand Driving Reminder for Moreton Island Beaches 🚙🏖️
Quick reminder: All beach access and driving on Moreton Island (Mulgumpin) is on soft sand — 4WD only, no 2WD vehicles. Drop your tyre pressure to 15–18 PSI as soon as you leave the barge landing (use a gauge and carry a compressor to re-inflate later). Road tyres are not suitable — you need all-terrain or mud-terrain tyres with good tread and strong sidewalls, otherwise you’ll get bogged quickly. If you’ve never driven on sand before, this is not the place to learn — the sand is deep and unpredictable, and getting stuck is very common. Strongly consider joining a guided 4WD tour or travelling with experienced friends. Always carry recovery gear (Maxtrax tracks/mats, shovel, snatch strap, etc.), check tide times, and stay on designated beaches/tracks. Safe driving = better surf sessions!
💡 Local Tips
🌴 Honeymoon Bay is a tiny, secluded cove framed by red sandstone cliffs, offering clear turquoise water and powdery white sand — one of Moreton Island’s most romantic hidden spots.
🏖️ The beach is unpatrolled, ideal for snorkelling, photography, and picnics, but caution is advised when swimming due to changing tides and swell.
☕ Bring your own supplies — there are no facilities at the bay, and the walk back up from the beach is steep but scenic.
🚶 Combine your visit with a stop at the Cape Moreton Lighthouse Lookout, Queensland’s oldest lighthouse, offering panoramic ocean views and whale sightings in winter.
🐢 Keep an eye out for turtles and reef fish near the rocky edges, and during calm days, dolphins can sometimes be seen cruising through the bay.
