🔵 Surfing at Eastern Beach
Eastern Beach (also known as the Surfside) is Moreton Island’s massive eastern-facing stretch — a 27km+ exposed sand highway of consistent beachbreaks that pick up east-southeast swells year-round, delivering punchy lefts and rights over shifting sandbars. The open coastline creates dynamic A-frames and occasional barrels when clean west offshore winds align, making it a raw, uncrowded paradise for surfers escaping Brisbane crowds. It’s a true adventure spot with 4WD access, dingo encounters, and endless space, but heavy rips and marine life demand respect in this national park wilderness.
Ideal for:
- Intermediate to advanced surfers chasing powerful, consistent beachbreak waves
- Small-to-large swell days (waist to overhead+) with east-southeast groundswells
- Uncrowded, long-ride sessions on shifting sandbars and A-frames
- Combining surf with 4WD beach driving, remote camping, and wildlife spotting
Always check strong rips, sharks (common sightings), jellyfish stings, and tides — no patrols anywhere; high tide often shapes better peaks, but access requires 4WD permit and caution. Experts only due to remoteness and hazards.

Sand Driving Reminder for Moreton Island Beaches 🚙🏖️
Quick reminder: All beach access and driving on Moreton Island (Mulgumpin) is on soft sand — 4WD only, no 2WD vehicles. Drop your tyre pressure to 15–18 PSI as soon as you leave the barge landing (use a gauge and carry a compressor to re-inflate later). Road tyres are not suitable — you need all-terrain or mud-terrain tyres with good tread and strong sidewalls, otherwise you’ll get bogged quickly. If you’ve never driven on sand before, this is not the place to learn — the sand is deep and unpredictable, and getting stuck is very common. Strongly consider joining a guided 4WD tour or travelling with experienced friends. Always carry recovery gear (Maxtrax tracks/mats, shovel, snatch strap, etc.), check tide times, and stay on designated beaches/tracks. Safe driving = better surf sessions!
