🔵 Surfing at Tangalooma

Tangalooma sits on Moreton Island’s protected western side in calm Moreton Bay waters — not a surf destination, but a mellow beach with tiny windswell or boat wake rollers at best, ideal for beginners experimenting in flat conditions or switching to SUP/kayaking. The focus here is the famous Tangalooma Wrecks (15 scuttled ships just offshore) teeming with fish, dolphins, and rays — perfect for post-surf snorkeling or relaxed vibes near the resort. It’s family-friendly with easy ferry access from Brisbane, dolphin feeding, and calm swimming, but don’t expect rideable waves like the eastern side.

Ideal for:

  • Beginners or non-surfers in super-small, safe conditions (ankle-high at most)
  • Tiny windswell days for fun SUP, bodysurfing, or learning basics
  • Relaxed tropical sessions close to amenities and resort facilities
  • Combining “surf” with world-class snorkeling at the wrecks and dolphin interactions

Always check wind (can get choppy) and currents near wrecks — this is protected bay water, not open ocean surf; great for families but not a true surf spot. Stick to resort-guided activities for safety.

Sand Driving Reminder for Moreton Island Beaches 🚙🏖️

Quick reminder: All beach access and driving on Moreton Island (Mulgumpin) is on soft sand — 4WD only, no 2WD vehicles. Drop your tyre pressure to 15–18 PSI as soon as you leave the barge landing (use a gauge and carry a compressor to re-inflate later). Road tyres are not suitable — you need all-terrain or mud-terrain tyres with good tread and strong sidewalls, otherwise you’ll get bogged quickly. If you’ve never driven on sand before, this is not the place to learn — the sand is deep and unpredictable, and getting stuck is very common. Strongly consider joining a guided 4WD tour or travelling with experienced friends. Always carry recovery gear (Maxtrax tracks/mats, shovel, snatch strap, etc.), check tide times, and stay on designated beaches/tracks. Safe driving = better surf sessions!
