Dunk Island is a rainforest-clad island in the Family Islands National Park, just 4 km off Mission Beach on the Cassowary Coast. With a scheduled ferry, beachfront eco tents and campsites, it delivers easy day trips or overnight escapes into the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

Dunk Island Mission Beach is the rainforest and reef island 4 km off the Cassowary Coast. The Dunk Island ferry from Clump Point makes it an easy day trip. Stay overnight with Dunk Island camping or Dunk Island glamping on the spit, then walk Mount Kootaloo and snorkel the fringing reef. The old resort lease is closed. The current island is the spit, the tracks and Family Islands National Park.

⛺Dunk Island Camping

⛺ Bayside Campsites — Dunk Island camping is six beachfront sites on the spit by the jetty. BYO tent. Up to six people per site.
📅 Open year-round — Seven days. Check-in from 12.30pm. Maximum four nights.
🚿 Shared facilities — Hot showers, flushing toilets, drinking water, free electric barbecues and picnic tables.
🔥 No fires — Bring a gas stove or use the electric barbecues. Generators are not allowed.
📋 Book Dunk Island — Queensland Parks does not manage or book Dunk Island camping.
🍽️ Monday and Tuesday — Restaurant closed those nights except June and September school holidays. Bring all food.

🏕️Dunk Island Glamping

🏕️ Beachfront Eco Tents — Dunk Island glamping is eight pre-set tents on the spit. This is the eco tent product, not a resort room.
🛏️ King, twin queen or twin single — Real bed, linen, towels, fan, lantern, esky and a charging dock
📅 Wednesday to Sunday — Two-night minimum, four-night maximum. Seven days in the June and September school holidays.
🌡️ November to May — Tents are not suited to heat-sensitive guests. No 240V in the tent except the charging dock.
🚿 Same amenities block — Hot showers, flushing toilets, electric barbecues and picnic tables beside the campsites.

🦎Wildlife

🦋 Ulysses butterflies — Iconic metallic blue butterflies commonly seen along rainforest tracks.
🐦 Birdlife — Over 100 species recorded, including orange-footed scrubfowl, Australian brush-turkeys, olive-backed sunbirds, emerald doves and ospreys.
🐢 Marine life — Sea turtles and tropical fish on the fringing reefs; seagrass beds support occasional dugong sightings.
🦎 Other species — Reptiles (pythons, tree snakes, geckos, skinks), fawn-footed melomys and flying-foxes.
🚫 No cassowaries — Cassowaries are not present on Dunk Island (mainland Mission Beach species only).

🐕 Dog-Friendly Rules

🚫 No dogs or domestic animals — Strictly prohibited on Dunk Island (Family Islands National Park and intertidal zones)
🐾 Protect wildlife — Rules exist to protect native birds, turtles and the island ecosystem

🚽 Toilets and showers — Flushing toilets and hot showers on the spit amenities block.
🔥 Electric barbecues — Free electric barbecues and picnic tables. Bring a gas stove if you want extra cooking. Open fires are prohibited.
💧 Drinking water — Potable water is available at the camp and glamping amenities.
🍽️ Beachfront restaurant — On the spit. Check current days and hours when you book.
🚫 No shop and no bins — Pack in and pack out. There is no rubbish collection on Dunk Island.
🚫 No generators — Not allowed on the spit.
♿ Access — Ferry boarding needs notice if you use a mobility device. Paths and tents are not a full wheelchair product.

☀️ May to October — Dry season with cooler temperatures, lower humidity, calm seas and ideal hiking conditions.
🌴 Year-round tropical climate — Warm weather every month; summers are hotter and more humid with higher rainfall.
🐢 Marine life — Turtles, reef fish and clear water present throughout the year.
🪼 Stinger season — November to May — wear a full-body stinger suit when entering the water.

⛴️ Official Dunk Island ferry — Clump Point Jetty, Mission Beach. About 15 minutes across.
📅 Check the timetable — Days, departures and holiday extras change. Confirm when you book.
🚌 Free shuttle — South Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach and Mission Beach town timed to the Dunk Island ferry.

🏨 Mission Beach mainland — Shops, restaurants and stays sit across the water at Dunk Island Mission Beach. Use this as the base for a day trip on the Dunk Island ferry.
