Hinchinbrook Island is Hinchinbrook Island National Park, a wilderness island reached only by boat to Hinchinbrook Island from Cardwell or Lucinda. The main visit is the 32 km Thorsborne Trail. Hinchinbrook Island camping is permit-only and the trail permit is not the same as a boat-camp permit.
🏝️Why Visit Hinchinbrook Island?
Munamudanamy is a national-park wilderness island. No resort, no village, no shop. The visit is the 32 km Thorsborne Trail or a boat camp on a signed beach. Book the right permit. Bring everything. The trail is usually closed January to February. Most people come for four days on the trail. A day boat to one bay is possible if a transfer will drop and collect you. Either way you are self-sufficient the moment you leave the mainland.

Book the correct permit first. Book the boat second. Start from Cardwell or Lucinda. Walk north to south or the reverse, but finish on the tide at Mulligan Creek. Do not bring a dog. Do not expect a shop. Print the permit and the transfer time. If the boat cannot land, you stay in Cardwell or Lucinda that night. There is no backup shop on the sand.

Do I need separate permits for camping and the Thorsborne Trail?
Yes. A standard boat-based camping permit allows you to camp at designated sites but does not allow you to walk the Thorsborne Trail. The Thorsborne Trail requires its own separate permit with strict daily limits. You must book the correct permit for the activity you plan to do.
How do you get to Hinchinbrook Island?
Boat access only. Commercial transfers and water taxis operate from Cardwell and Lucinda (Dungeness). Private vessels can also launch from either town. There is no bridge or public ferry.
How long is the Thorsborne Trail?
32 km one way. Allow about 4 days. Difficult. Not a graded tourist path.
Are dogs allowed on Hinchinbrook Island?
No. Domestic animals are prohibited on the island and all tidal lands within the marine park.
Are there facilities on Hinchinbrook Island?
Very limited. Most camping areas have no facilities. A few day-use and camping spots have toilets and picnic tables. There are no shops, no resorts and no powered sites — you must be fully self-sufficient.
When is the best time to visit?
April to September (dry season) is best for the Thorsborne Trail and camping. The trail is closed January–February due to extreme heat and flooding risk.
How do I book camping?
Book parks.qld.gov.au. Hinchinbrook Island camping on the trail is capped at 12 starters a day. Maximum 2 nights at each camp except 1 night at Mulligan Falls. A boat-based camping permit does not let you walk the trail.
When is the trail closed?
Usually January to February, plus flood, fire and cyclone closures. Check Park Alerts before you travel.
Can I fish the creeks?
No. Fishing is banned in all freshwater streams, lagoons and creeks on the island.
