Perched at the northern end of 75 Mile Beach, Indian Head is Fraser Island’s most dramatic natural landmark — a volcanic headland rising above the turquoise Coral Sea. Formed millions of years ago from ancient lava flows, this rugged lookout offers breathtaking 360-degree views across the coastline and the endless sand highway below. From the top, visitors can often spot humpback whales breaching offshore, along with dolphins, rays, and sea turtles gliding through the clear shallows.
Steeped in Butchulla cultural heritage, Indian Head (known traditionally as Takky Wooroo) holds deep significance as a place of gathering and observation. Today, it stands as both a spiritual site and a natural vantage point, rewarding those who make the short climb with some of the best panoramas on K’gari. Just south of the headland lie the Champagne Pools — one of the island’s most popular swimming spots — while the wild expanse of 75 Mile Beach stretches endlessly to the south.
Whether you come for the whale-watching, photography, or simply to feel the power of nature at its rawest, Indian Head captures the essence of Fraser Island — untamed, sacred, and unforgettable.
Important: All beach driving on K’gari (Fraser Island) is soft sand — 4WD only, tyres deflated to 15–18 PSI, recovery gear essential. If you’re new to sand driving, join a guided tour. 🔵 Surfing at Indian Head
Indian Head is K’gari’s dramatic easternmost headland lookout, shaping a right-hand point break that peels off the rocky point on east-southeast swells with west offshore winds. It delivers reasonably consistent, rippable walls and sections — best in winter for cleaner, more powerful rides — with stunning panoramic views over the Pacific, sharks, rays, turtles, and migrating whales. A rugged, uncrowded gem near Champagne Pools and Waddy Point, ideal for experienced surfers wanting nature-rich, high-reward waves in a UNESCO wilderness.
Ideal for:
- Intermediate to advanced surfers chasing peeling right-hand point waves
- Medium swell days (waist to overhead) with east-southeast swells
- Clean, rippable sections with offshore west winds
- Sessions with epic wildlife spotting (sharks, whales) and lookout views
Always check east-southeast swell and west winds for best shape — can get sectiony or close out. Heavy shark presence (frequent sightings), strong currents, and no patrols; experts only in this remote area.
🌊 Example forecast for Indian Head
– remote exposed point/reef break on Fraser Island’s east coast (Indian Head); powerful 1.5-2m+ waves with fast, hollow sections and long rides best for experienced to advanced surfers only due to strong rips, sharks, remote access, and no patrols.

Sand Driving Reminder for Fraser Island (K’gari) Beaches 🚙🏝️
Important: All beach driving on K’gari (Fraser Island) is soft sand — 4WD only, no 2WD vehicles permitted. Deflate your tyres to 15–18 PSI as soon as you leave the barge (use a reliable gauge and carry a compressor to re-inflate later). Road/highway tyres are not suitable — you need all-terrain or mud-terrain tyres with strong sidewalls and aggressive tread, otherwise you will get bogged quickly. If you’re new to sand driving, this is not the place to learn — the sand is deep, soft and very unforgiving, and getting stuck is extremely common (and often expensive to recover from). Strongly consider joining a guided 4WD tag-along tour or travelling with experienced friends. Always carry recovery gear (Maxtrax tracks/mats, shovel, snatch strap, etc.), check tide times religiously, and stay on designated beaches/tracks only. Safe driving = better surf sessions!
