Maheno Shipwreck Beach, on the eastern coast of Fraser Island (K’gari), is one of the island’s most famous and photographed landmarks. Here the rusting remains of the SS Maheno, a 1905 luxury liner beached by a cyclone in 1935, rest dramatically on the sand, framed by surf and sky. Stretching along 75 Mile Beach, this wide, windswept shoreline combines raw natural beauty with fascinating history — a must-see stop for every K’gari adventure.
Important: All beach driving on K’gari (Fraser Island) is soft sand — 4WD only, tyres deflated to 15–18 PSI, recovery gear essential. If you’re new to sand driving, join a guided tour. 🔵 Surfing at Maheno Beach
Maheno Beach is the famous section of 75 Mile Beach around the historic SS Maheno shipwreck — an exposed beachbreak offering reliable lefts and rights that work year-round on east-southeast swells. The open sand setup delivers consistent, rippable waves with good peel when west offshore winds blow, often uncrowded even on solid days. It’s a bucket-list combo: surf empty peaks at sunrise with the rusting wreck as backdrop, then explore the island’s lakes and rainforests — perfect for adventurous surfers who love raw, scenic isolation.
Ideal for:
- Intermediate to advanced surfers seeking reliable, uncrowded beachbreak waves
- Small-to-medium swell days (knee to overhead) with east-southeast direction
- Forgiving lefts/rights that hold at all tides
- Epic photo ops and sessions blending surf with iconic shipwreck views
Always check swell angle (east-southeast ideal), west winds for clean faces, and hazards like rips, sharks, and shifting sand. Remote spot with no patrols; pair with 4WD access and shark awareness for safety.
🌊 Example forecast for Maheno Shipwreck

🐬 Wildlife
Fraser Island’s eastern shore is alive with marine and bird life. Spot dolphins, turtles, and humpback whales during winter, or look for sea eagles and ospreys circling above. In the dunes behind the beach, you may see kangaroos, wallabies, and native birds foraging near the casuarinas. Remember — dingoes (wongari) are common across K’gari, so always secure food and maintain a safe distance.

- 🚙 4WD vehicle and tide-aware driving essential.
- 🚫 No camping directly at the wreck site — designated zones nearby.
- 🐾 No dogs allowed on the island.

🗺️ Getting There
🚙 Driving: The Maheno Shipwreck lies on 75 Mile Beach, about 10 km north of Eli Creek and 20 minutes’ drive from Eurong — accessible only by 4WD and at low tide. From Rainbow Beach or Inskip Point, follow the beach north after arriving via barge, keeping to the firm sand near the high-tide line.
🛥️ Tours: All major Fraser Island 4WD and eco-tours include the Maheno as a highlight stop on the eastern beach route.
🅿️ Parking: Informal sand parking is available above the high-tide mark near the wreck. Avoid parking too close — tides can rise quickly.
💡 Info correct at time of writing — check Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) for current conditions, tides, and vehicle access alerts before travelling.
Sand Driving Reminder for Fraser Island (K’gari) Beaches 🚙🏝️
Important: All beach driving on K’gari (Fraser Island) is soft sand — 4WD only, no 2WD vehicles permitted. Deflate your tyres to 15–18 PSI as soon as you leave the barge (use a reliable gauge and carry a compressor to re-inflate later). Road/highway tyres are not suitable — you need all-terrain or mud-terrain tyres with strong sidewalls and aggressive tread, otherwise you will get bogged quickly. If you’re new to sand driving, this is not the place to learn — the sand is deep, soft and very unforgiving, and getting stuck is extremely common (and often expensive to recover from). Strongly consider joining a guided 4WD tag-along tour or travelling with experienced friends. Always carry recovery gear (Maxtrax tracks/mats, shovel, snatch strap, etc.), check tide times religiously, and stay on designated beaches/tracks only. Safe driving = better surf sessions!
