Welcome to 75 Mile Beach — the world-famous sandy highway that stretches the entire eastern coast of Fraser Island (K’gari). Spanning almost 120 kilometres of golden sand, this unpatrolled surf beach is both a natural wonder and an adventure playground for 4WD enthusiasts. Acting as the island’s main coastal road, it links some of K’gari’s most iconic sights — from the freshwater streams of Eli Creek and the haunting Maheno Shipwreck, to the volcanic cliffs of Indian Head and the crystal rock pools of Champagne Pools.
As you drive the tide-packed sand highway, you’ll pass Poyungan Rocks, Happy Valley, Cathedral Beach, Dundubara, and Orchid Beach — each offering its own mix of camping, fishing, and breathtaking scenery. South of Indian Head, the shimmering Eli Creek invites travellers to float through pure freshwater channels, while The Pinnacles showcase dramatic coloured-sand cliffs carved by centuries of wind and water. Further north, Champagne Pools provide a safe natural swimming spot protected from surf waves — a true highlight for many visitors.
Drivers are reminded that 75 Mile Beach is also an active airstrip, with small planes regularly landing and taking off, and tides can change rapidly — so it’s best suited to experienced off-road drivers who respect both the ocean and the island’s conditions.
Whether you’re exploring the famous landmarks, watching humpback whales off Indian Head, or simply soaking in the untamed beauty of K’gari’s east coast, 75 Mile Beach offers an unforgettable blend of wilderness, adventure, and coastal wonder found nowhere else on Earth.
Important: All beach driving on K’gari (Fraser Island) is soft sand — 4WD only, tyres deflated to 15–18 PSI, recovery gear essential. If you’re new to sand driving, join a guided tour. 🔵 Surfing at 75 Mile Beach
75 Mile Beach is K’gari’s iconic eastern “highway” — a massive, exposed sand stretch delivering consistent beachbreaks with punchy lefts and rights that fire on southeast groundswells year-round. Shifting sandbars create A-frames, barrels (up to 6-9ft on epic days), and long rides, especially at high tide when the beach picks up more shape without the famous 4WD traffic. It’s a raw, remote paradise for surfers craving empty lineups, dingo sightings, and whale watching in season — far from mainland crowds, but with serious hazards in this World Heritage wilderness.
Ideal for:
- Advanced surfers chasing powerful, barreling beachbreak waves
- Medium-to-large swell days (waist to overhead+) with southeast swells
- Uncrowded, adrenaline-fueled sessions on shifting sandbars
- Combining surf with 4WD adventures, shipwreck views, and remote camping
Always check strong rips, sharks (frequent sightings), jellyfish, and tides — high tide often best for shape, but access requires 4WD permits and caution. Not patrolled or beginner-safe; experts only due to remoteness and marine life.
🌊 Example forecast for 75 Mile Beach/Maheno Shipwreck
– vast exposed beach break along 75 Mile Beach on Fraser Island’s east coast; variable small to large waves (often 1-2m+) with shifting bars, best mid-high tide for shape — suitable for intermediates/advanced due to rips, sharks, and remote access.

🗺️ Getting There
🚙 Driving: 75 Mile Beach runs along the entire eastern coast of K’gari (Fraser Island) and is only accessible by 4WD vehicle. Vehicle barges depart daily from Inskip Point (Rainbow Beach) and River Heads (Hervey Bay), landing at Hook Point or Wanggoolba Creek.
🛥️ Tours: Guided 4WD tours depart from Hervey Bay, Rainbow Beach, and Noosa, including beach drives and key landmarks like Eli Creek, Maheno Shipwreck, and The Pinnacles.
🅿️ Parking: There are no sealed car parks — vehicles pull up above the high-tide line. Always check tide times before driving, as the beach doubles as a highway and landing strip.
💡 Info correct at time of writing — check Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) for permits, tide charts, and road alerts before travelling.
Sand Driving Reminder for Fraser Island (K’gari) Beaches 🚙🏝️
Important: All beach driving on K’gari (Fraser Island) is soft sand — 4WD only, no 2WD vehicles permitted. Deflate your tyres to 15–18 PSI as soon as you leave the barge (use a reliable gauge and carry a compressor to re-inflate later). Road/highway tyres are not suitable — you need all-terrain or mud-terrain tyres with strong sidewalls and aggressive tread, otherwise you will get bogged quickly. If you’re new to sand driving, this is not the place to learn — the sand is deep, soft and very unforgiving, and getting stuck is extremely common (and often expensive to recover from). Strongly consider joining a guided 4WD tag-along tour or travelling with experienced friends. Always carry recovery gear (Maxtrax tracks/mats, shovel, snatch strap, etc.), check tide times religiously, and stay on designated beaches/tracks only. Safe driving = better surf sessions!
💡 Local Tips
🏝️ 75 Mile Beach is one of the world’s most unique highways, serving as both a beach and a 4WD track stretching the full length of Fraser Island’s east coast.
🚗 A Vehicle Access Permit is required before entering the island — fines apply for driving without one.
🌊 Do not swim in the ocean here — strong rips, sharks, and unpredictable surf make it unsafe. Instead, swim safely at Eli Creek or Champagne Pools.
📸 Sunrise over the ocean is spectacular, especially near the Maheno Shipwreck and The Pinnacles.
🐬 Look out for dingoes, sea eagles, and migrating whales (June–October) along the shoreline.
