Lizard Island is a granite national park on the far northern Great Barrier Reef, about 240 km north of Cairns and 27 km offshore. Stay at Lizard Island Resort or camp at Watsons Bay, then snorkel the Clam Gardens and dive the fringing reef and Cod Hole.

Lizard Island is the far-northern reef island you book when you want space, not a ferry crowd. One luxury property, Lizard Island Resort, sits inside the national park among 24 beaches, with a separate QPWS camp at Watsons Bay. The draw is the water: shore snorkelling at the Clam Gardens and Blue Lagoon, plus diving on the fringing reef and out to Cod Hole.

🤿Lizard Island Snorkelling

🦪 Clam Gardens — Best shore snorkel on the island. Giant clams live on the reef in Watsons Bay. Enter from the southern end of the beach near the Watsons Cottage track. Go at high tide.
💙 Blue Lagoon — Shallow, sheltered coral patches and clean sand on the south-east side. Walk from the airstrip end of the Pandanus Track. Calm and good for a first look.
🏖️ Anchor Bay — Fringing reef in front of Lizard Island Resort. Easy entry off the resort beach. Resort guests can get gear at the Beach Club.
🗓️ Best season — May to October for clearer, calmer water. November to May wear a stinger suit.

Lizard Island Diving

🐠 Local reef — Fringing sites around the island include Mermaid Cove, Turtle Beach, Cobia Hole and Blue Lagoon. These are the short-boat dives.
🐟 Cod Hole — Ribbon Reef 10, about 20 km east. Famous for large potato cod. Boat ride is about 60 to 90 minutes and weather decides if the boat goes.
🚤 Who can go — Resort dive boats are for Lizard Island Resort guests. Campers do not use those boats. Independent divers reach Cod Hole on a liveaboard from Cairns, not a public day ferry.
🧭 Why this island — Lizard Island is the only Great Barrier Reef resort that can run Cod Hole as a day trip instead of an overnight liveaboard.

🏕️ Lizard Island Camping

⛺ Watsons Bay only — The one legal camp on Lizard Island National Park. Five tent sites behind the beach. Sand sites, not numbered.
🚶 Access — Walk 1.2 km from the airstrip with all your gear, or arrive by boat in Watsons Bay. No vehicle access.
🚻 What is there — Composting toilet, picnic tables, hot-plate BBQ, shade poles.
🚫 What is not — No showers, no powered sites, no bins, no fires, no generators, no shops, no mobile coverage.
💧 Water — Hand pump about 250 m away. Treat it before you drink. If the pump fails, the backup tap is at the Marlin Bar, about a 40 minute walk. Carry containers.

🛠️Facilities

🏨 Lizard Island Resort — Restaurant, bars, pool, spa and watersports for paying guests only. About 40 rooms and villas. Children 10 and over.
🍻 Marlin Bar — Resort bar at the eastern end of Anchor Bay. Campers may use it when it is open. It is not open every day.
⛺ Watsons Bay camp — Toilet, tables and BBQ only. No showers and no kiosk.
🛒 No shops — Bring all food, water treatment and rubbish bags. Nothing is sold at the camp.
📶 No coverage — Do not rely on a phone at Watsons Bay.
♿ Access — Soft sand camp and a 1.2 km carry from the airstrip. Not wheelchair friendly.

🌤️ Best Overall — May to October for dry season, calm seas and best diving visibility
🪼 Stinger Season — November to May — stinger suits recommended when swimming or snorkelling
🏝️ Year-Round — Warm tropical conditions (summers are hotter and more humid)

✈️ Flying — Private charter flight from Cairns (East Air Terminal), approximately 60 minutes scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef
🚤 Private Vessel — Possible with prior permission and calm weather (moorings limited around Anchor Bay)
🚫 No Road Access — Island is 27 km offshore with no ferry service
🅿️ Parking — Long-stay parking available at Cairns Airport for guests on charter flights
