Green Island is the closest coral cay to Cairns, a 45 minute Green Island day trip from Reef Fleet Terminal for Green Island snorkelling off the beach, with Green Island Resort the only overnight stay.
🏝️Why Visit Green Island Cairns?
Green Island Cairns is the easy reef island when you want sand, a short flat walk and the reef a few metres off the beach, not a mountain hike. The cay is small and self-contained: flagged swim water, hire gear, cafes and showers sit next to the jetty. Book a Green Island day trip if you are coming from town. Book Green Island Resort only if you want the island after the last ferry leaves.

🐊 Marineland Melanesia — Crocodile and marine display. Confirm it is open before you plan around it

🏁 Where — Start at the flagged beach by the jetty. The fringing reef is close enough that most first-timers stay here
🐢 What you see — Coral, reef fish and regular green turtles in the shallows
🦺 November to May — Wear a stinger suit. Tours often supply one. Hire is on the island if your ticket does not include it
🚤 Beach vs boat — Beach Green Island snorkelling is the default. The boat snorkel is a paid extra to deeper sites off the cay
🚫 Stay inside the flags — The patrolled swim pocket is the safe start point. Do not stand on coral
👓 Gear — Mask, snorkel and vest are hire items unless your Green Island day trip package includes them

🐢 Turtles — Green and hawksbill turtles feed on the seagrass around the cay all year. Look from the jetty, the beach and while snorkelling.
🐠 Reef fish and rays — Coral and fish start close to the sand. Glass-bottom boats cover the same water if you stay dry.
🐦 Birds — Ospreys and sea eagles over the beach. Buff-banded rails on the paths and around the resort.
🌳 Forest — A small spectacled flying-fox camp sits in the vine forest. Do not touch bats.
🚫 Do not feed — Fish and birds are protected. Feeding makes them aggressive.

⛴️ Operator — Great Adventures is the main Green Island ferry. Big Cat also runs Cairns services.

⛴️ Green Island ferry — About 45 minutes from Cairns. The cay sits about 27 km offshore
📍 Terminal — Reef Fleet Terminal, 1 Spence Street. Check in at the operator desk, then board
🅿️ Parking — Paid parking near the marina. Do not count on a free all-day bay
🚌 From the airport — Cairns Airport is a short transfer to the terminal. Build in check-in time
🚤 Private boat — Public moorings exist. Follow marine park rules. This is not how most visitors arrive

Approximately 45 minutes on a high-speed catamaran from the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal. Multiple daily departures operate (main operator Great Adventures).
Can you snorkel straight off the beach on Green Island?
Yes. The fringing reef starts close to shore, making it one of the easiest places for beginners and families to snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef. Turtles are commonly seen.
Is there camping on Green Island?
No. Camping is not permitted. The only accommodation is Green Island Resort.
When are stingers present?
Marine stingers can occur from November to May. Stinger suits are recommended and are usually provided with organised tours or available for hire.
