Fitzroy Island FAQs

How long is the ferry to Fitzroy Island from Cairns?

Approximately 45 minutes each way on high-speed catamarans from the Cairns Marlin Marina / Reef Fleet Terminal. Multiple daily services operate (operators include Fitzroy Flyer and Sunlover). Pre-booking is strongly recommended, especially in peak periods.

Is Nudey Beach a nudist beach?

No. Despite the name, Nudey Beach requires swimwear. It is a pristine white coral-sand beach reached by a moderate 1.2 km (about 45-minute return) rainforest and coastal woodland track from the resort area.

Can you snorkel straight off the beach on Fitzroy Island?

Yes. Fringing reef is accessible in Welcome Bay near the jetty and especially around Nudey Beach. Expect hard and soft corals, reef fish, and frequent turtle sightings in shallow water. Hire gear on the island or add it to ferry packages. Strong currents can occur elsewhere around the island.

Are dogs allowed on Fitzroy Island?

No. Domestic animals are prohibited on Fitzroy Island National Park and all tidal lands (beaches, rocks, mangroves) within the Great Barrier Reef Coast Marine Park. On-the-spot fines apply.

Is there camping on Fitzroy Island?

Yes. A beachfront council campground (managed by the resort) has approximately 20 tent sites a short walk from the jetty. Sites cost around $39 per tent per night (max 4 people, tent size limited). Self-catering only — cold showers, BBQ (no open flames), no BYO alcohol in the campground, no generators or fires. Bookings essential. Resort rooms, suites, beach cabins and bungalows are also available.
