Pelorus Island is the exclusive use private island 800 metres north of Orpheus Island. Most guests take a helicopter to Pelorus Island from Townsville. Pelorus Private Island is the five-suite all-inclusive residence. The house reef is the start point for Pelorus Island snorkelling.
🏝️Why Visit Pelorus Private Island?
This is one residence on 400 hectares, not a shared resort. Five ocean-facing suites take up to 11 guests. Pelorus Island Townsville guests fly into Townsville, then take the helicopter across to the homestead. The beach, pool and fringing reef sit in front of the homestead. A private chef and water craft are part of the stay. You do not share the island with other booking groups.

🤿 House reef swim — Walk in from the sand in front of the residence.
🚤 Water craft — Seabobs, jet skis, kayaks and paddleboards are included.
🐠 Diving — Guided dives and outer-reef runs to John Brewer Reef and the Museum of Underwater Art, subject to weather and tides.
🏝️ Boat days — Private charters to the Palm Group and Hinchinbrook Island National Park.
🌅 Picnics and sunsets — Hosted on the beach after you land.

🤿Pelorus Island Snorkelling
🪸 Off the sand — The fringing reef starts in the shallows in front of the residence. No day-boat for the first swim.
🐠 What you see — Coral, reef fish, turtles and rays. Manta rays turn up at times, not on every swim.
👨👩👧 Who it suits — The inner reef is the easy option. Deeper water and the outer reef are a separate boat run.
🪼 Stinger season November to May — Wear a full stinger suit in those months.
🚩 Unpatrolled — No flags and no lifeguards on this beach.
🚫 Guests only — There is no public walk-up snorkel desk.
🐋 Wildlife & Reef on Pelorus Island
🐢 Green turtles — Regularly seen on the house reef and around the Palm Group.
🪸 Fringing reef — High coral cover in the shallows off the private beach.
🐠 Reef fish and rays — Common on the beach reef.
🐋 Humpback whales — In season from June to October on the crossing and from the beach.
🏕️ Camping on Pelorus Island
🏨 Not a campground — The stay is exclusive use of the five-suite residence. You are not booking a tent site.
🚫 Not Queensland Parks — This island is not a QPWS camping park. Do not try to book it on parks.qld.gov.au.
⛺ Older tourism listings — Some Townsville pages still say self-sufficient camping is allowed, with no water, no toilets and no showers. That is not the residence stay.
🏝️ Nearby national park camps — Book Orpheus Island National Park or Hinchinbrook Island National Park if you want a permit camp in this group.

🪼 Stinger season November to May — Marine stingers are more common. Full stinger suits for swims.
🌡️ Climate — Warm tropical days, typically 25 to 31 degrees.
🗺️ Helicopter to Pelorus Island
🚁 From Townsville — About 30 minutes from Townsville Domestic Airport. Pelorus Island Townsville is the usual mainland gateway.
✈️ From Cairns — About 90 minutes by private helicopter.
🛥️ Private yacht — Charter from the mainland through the island reservations team.
🚫 No public ferry — No scheduled passenger ferry and no walk-up day-visitor desk.

Is Pelorus Island a private island?
Yes. Pelorus Private Island is exclusive use. Official operator copy is that the island is always entirely yours for the stay.
How many guests can stay?
The residence has five suites and takes up to 11 guests.
How do you get to Pelorus Island?
The normal arrival is a helicopter to Pelorus Island from Townsville in about 30 minutes, or from Cairns in about 90 minutes. Private yacht charter is also arranged through the island team. There is no public ferry.
Are dogs allowed?
No. Domestic animals are not permitted.
Can you camp on Pelorus Island?
No as a holiday park or Queensland Parks campground. Pelorus Island is not listed on parks.qld.gov.au, and Pelorus Private Island is an exclusive-use five-suite stay, not a campsite.
