Harbour Beach is Mackay’s primary patrolled beach and one of the region’s safest swimming locations. Located right next to the marina, it’s a favourite for families, locals, and visitors seeking a convenient and well-serviced beach day. With professional weekday patrols and volunteer coverage on weekends, it’s ideal for swimming and water sports. The beach also plays host to community events and beach sports, making it a lively hub on the Mackay coastline.

🏊 Swimming — High tide, between the flags when patrols are on. No stinger nets.
🧺 Picnic — Shade, tables and barbecues in the parks by the club.
🛝 Playgrounds — Two park areas near the surf club.
🚶 Walks — Foreshore paths and the harbour breakwater.
🎣 Fishing — Breakwater and harbour walls. Jew, mackerel, trevally, bream.

🏄 Surf look — North Wall and the beach south of the walls when there is swell.

🌊This is Mackay’s closest flagged ocean swim. It is still a big-tide beach. At low tide you are a long way from the club on a wide bar.
🚩 Seasonal patrols — Mackay Surf Club. Weekends, school holidays and public holidays from the September school holidays to May Day.
🌊 High tide only — SLSQ: relatively safe at high tide in normal waves. Low tide puts you far from the flags, with rips possible across the bar.
🪼 Stingers November to May — No nets. Full-body suit if you enter the water.
🐊 Be Crocwise — Creek and harbour edges. Do not treat those as a swim.
🏊 Stinger-free fallback — Bluewater Lagoon, 32 River Street, about 5 to 10 minutes back toward town.

🏄Surfing Harbour Beach

🏄 Wave Type — East-facing beach and wall setup south of the harbour walls, including North Wall. Short peaks over sand and flat rock. Common size 0.5 to 1 m.
🌊 Best Conditions — Southeast windswell. Bigger on strong SE trades or a cyclone pulse. Mid to high tide is the usable window.
🧘 Crowd Level — Low to moderate. Locals, not a southern Queensland lineup.
🎯 Ideal For — Intermediates and longboarders on a rare clean day. Beginners belong between the flags at high tide, not on the wall.
🛡️ Protection — Reef-filtered. This is not Kirra.
⚠️ Safety — Rocks at the walls. Rips on the low-tide bar. Stingers in season. Check Beachsafe and the flags.

🛟Mackay Surf Club

🏨 Mackay Surf Club — Officially Mackay Surf Life Saving Club, East Point Drive, on Harbour Beach.
🚩 Patrol base — Flags go up here in season. Nippers and club programs run from this building.
🚿 Clubhouse — Change rooms, showers, canteen when open, BBQ area.
🍽️ Food — Club meals when the restaurant is trading. Confirm hours.
📍 Park here — This is the main beach access node, not the far southern river-mouth end.

⚓Mackay Marina

⚓ Mackay Marina — Reef Marina precinct next to Harbour Beach. Dining, takeaway and the boat harbour.
🚶 Walk — Foreshore and breakwater from the surf club into the marina.
🎣 Walls — The fishing people actually use.
🚤 Tours — Reef and island boats leave from the harbour, not from the sand.
☕ After the swim — This is the meal, not a second beach.

🐶 Dog Friendly Harbour Beach

🦮 On-leash only — Beach, parks and paths. Not a designated off-leash beach.
🗑️ Pick up — Mackay Regional Council rules apply.
🚫 No off-leash sand here — Do not take the lead off.
🐕 City off-leash sand — Far Beach, Evans Street to Bridge Road, 5am to 8am and 5pm to 8pm only.
