Wilson Island is an adult only Capricornia Cays coral cay about 80 km off Gladstone, reached only by a short boat from Heron Island. Wilson Island glamping is nine Reef Safari Tents for 18 guests, with beach snorkelling and Wilson Island turtle nesting in season.

Wilson Island is an adult only Capricornia Cays coral cay with nine Reef Safari Tents and a hard cap of 18 guests. The draw is quiet sand, a fringing reef you step into from the beach, and nights with no town lights. It is not a day-trip island and not a family resort.
🎣 Things to Do on Wilson Island
🐠 Beach snorkel — step in from the sand for coral, rays and reef sharks. Gear is included and collected at Heron Island.
🐢 Turtle nights in season — green and loggerhead turtles nest from about November to March. Hatchlings start from early January.
🛶 Kayak and SUP — single and double kayaks plus stand-up boards are part of the stay when weather and tide allow.
🌅 Sunrise and sunset — short beach walks with no roads and no day crowds.
🌌 Stargazing — no wifi and no town glow. The Longhouse and decks are the night spots.
🍃 Pisonia walks — short self-guided loops. Ask the hosts for a guided island walk.

🤿 Wilson Island snorkelling — this is a beach-entry reef, not a boat-snorkel product. Mask, snorkel and fins are included.
🪸 Wilson Bommie — a large coral bommie about 30 metres offshore. Ask the hosts for a bearing before you swim.
⏰ Best window — official advice is about 2 hours either side of low tide. Wind and swell still decide the day.
🚫 No take — Marine National Park. No fishing and no collecting.

🐢 Wilson Island turtle nesting — green and loggerhead turtles use this cay from about November to March.
🐣 Hatchlings — they start from early January. The island still closes 1 February to 1 April, so late hatchling dates fall inside the shutdown.
⚠️ Night rules — no lights on the beach, no flash, stay low, stay 10 metres back, pass behind the turtle.
🐦 Birds — wedge-tailed shearwaters and other seabirds nest here. That is why the cay shuts in late summer.

♿ Access — not wheelchair accessible. Beach landing and soft sand only.

🐢 October to March — turtle nesting, then hatchlings from early January.

🤿 May to September — cooler air and usually clearer snorkel water.
🪼 Stingers — mainland stinger season is November to May. This is an offshore cay, not a patrolled surf beach. Check current advice before you swim.
🗺️ Getting To Wilson Island
⛴️ Wilson Island Heron Island — this is the only guest route. There is no public ferry that skips Heron.
🚤 Gladstone Marina — Heron Islander launch about 2 hours, most days except Tuesday, Thursday and Christmas Day. Then a 25 minute beach-landing boat to the cay.
🚁 Gladstone Airport — helicopter to Heron Island about 30 minutes, then the same Wilson boat.
🅿️ Cars — leave the vehicle at Gladstone Marina. Confirm current fees and time limits with the marina before you lock up.
💡 Bookings — transfers, tides and weather sit with Wilson Island and Heron Island Resort. Check both before you fly.

How do you get to Wilson Island?
Wilson Island Heron Island is the only guest route. Fly to Gladstone, then take the Heron Islander from Gladstone Marina (about 2 hours, most days except Tuesday, Thursday and Christmas Day) or a helicopter from Gladstone Airport (about 30 minutes). From Heron Island the Wilson boat is about 25 minutes and beach-lands on the cay. There is no public ferry that skips Heron.
When is Wilson Island closed?
Every year from 1 February to 1 April for bird breeding, set by Queensland National Parks. Do not book those dates.
Can I see turtles nesting on Wilson Island?
Yes. Wilson Island is an important nesting site for green and loggerhead turtles. Nesting typically occurs from November to March, with hatchlings emerging from early January onwards. Guests staying during peak season often witness turtles coming ashore or hatchlings making their way to the water (subject to strict viewing guidelines and no lights/flash photography).
Is Wilson Island suitable for day trips or only overnight guests?
Wilson Island is strictly for overnight resort guests only. There is no public day-visitor access, no day trips, and no independent camping. The island is limited to a maximum of 18 guests at any time across nine Reef Safari Tents. A maximum of 18 guests creating a highly exclusive, low-impact experience.
