📜 History of the Maheno Shipwreck
The SS Maheno was built in Scotland in 1905 as a modern luxury passenger steamer for the Trans-Tasman route between Australia and New Zealand. During World War I she was converted into a hospital ship and carried thousands of wounded soldiers, including many Anzacs from Gallipoli.
By 1935 the ship had reached the end of her commercial life and was sold to a Japanese company for scrap. While being towed from Sydney to Osaka, a severe cyclone struck off the Queensland coast on 7 July 1935. The towline snapped and the vessel drifted until she ran aground on 75 Mile Beach.
Attempts to refloat her failed. The Maheno wreck has remained on the beach ever since, slowly deteriorating in the salt and sand. Today it is one of the most recognisable and photographed landmarks on Maheno Shipwreck Fraser Island.
