π© Dog Beach Safety Tips β Gold Coast Edition
The Gold Coast offers fantastic dog beaches, but the Queensland sun, surf, and wildlife bring some unique risks. Follow these local tips to keep your dog safe and happy.

Avoid the hottest part of the day β Visit early morning (before 9 AM) or late afternoon (after 4 PM), especially in summer. Hot sand can burn your dogβs paws β test it with the back of your hand first. Peak heat (10 AMβ4 PM) raises the risk of heatstroke.
Never let your dog drink seawater β Saltwater causes dehydration, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Always bring plenty of fresh water and a portable bowl.
Watch for strong currents & rips β Gold Coast beaches have powerful rips, especially around The Spit, Currumbin, and Burleigh. Keep dogs in shallow water or calm creek areas (like Tallebudgera Creek). Use a dog life jacket for weaker swimmers.
Bluebottles & marine stingers β Common in summer. If your dog is stung, rinse the area with seawater (not freshwater) and seek vet help immediately. Check Surf Life Saving flags and daily beach reports.
Tides matter β Low tide often gives more safe, shallow play space, especially at creek mouths and The Spit.
Stay well away from flagged/patrolled areas β Dogs are strictly prohibited within 200 metres of any flagged swimming zone at all times. Always follow council signs.
Sun & heat protection β Light-coloured or short-haired dogs can get sunburn. Consider pet-safe sunscreen on ears, nose, and belly. Provide shade (umbrella or pop-up tent) and never leave your dog in a hot car.
Paw & skin care β Rinse your dog with fresh water after swimming to remove salt and sand. Check paws for cuts from shells or hot sand.
Supervision & control β Even in off-leash zones, keep your dog under effective voice control. Never leave them unattended. Watch for wildlife (birds, turtles, crabs) β chasing them can stress both your dog and the environment.
Emergency tip: Save the number for your nearest 24-hour vet (e.g. Greencross or Animal Emergency Centre) before heading out.
