Vlasoff Cay Cairns is a public white-sand cay on Vlasoff Reef, about 37 to 40 km northeast of the city and just north of Green Island. The normal visitor trip is a Vlasoff Cay helicopter landing with about two hours on the sand for Vlasoff Cay snorkelling and a Vlasoff Cay picnic. There is no regular ferry, no camping and no facilities.

Vlasoff Cay is one of the most breathtaking sand cays on the Great Barrier Reef — a tiny circle of soft white sand floating in turquoise water, surrounded by colourful coral gardens and incredible marine life. Its remote, untouched beauty makes it a favourite for helicopter landings, romantic picnics, proposals, and photography. With shallow, crystal-clear water and powdery sand that appears and disappears with the tides, Vlasoff Cay feels like your own private island paradise approximately 40 km northeast of Cairns.

Vlasoff Cay Snorkelling

🐢 Turtles and rays — Common in clear water. Reef sharks are seen less often.
👕 Stinger suit — Wear one November to May. Packages usually include lycra in season.
🌊 Conditions — Only enter when the pilot or skipper says the water is safe. This is unpatrolled reef.
🚫 Not Michaelmas — Michaelmas Cay is the nearby bird cay with boats. This snorkel is from the Vlasoff sand.

🌊 Tide — Flights are timed to the sand. The cay can be a thin strip or almost gone on a big tide.
✈️ Weather — If the cay is occupied or the weather is wrong, you get a longer scenic instead of a landing.

🚁 Vlasoff Cay helicopter — Main visitor access. About 20 minutes each way from Cairns. Nautilus Aviation is the usual landing operator from the Pier Heliport.

Vlasoff Cay FAQs
How do you get to Vlasoff Cay?
The primary way is by private or scenic helicopter (Nautilus Aviation and similar operators from Cairns). Flights are ~20 minutes each way with 1–2 hours on the cay (tide and weather dependent). Private boats or charters can also reach it in calm conditions; there are no regular commercial group boat tours that stop specifically at Vlassof Cay.
Is Vlasoff Cay a private island?
No. It is a public uninhabited sand cay within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Visits are day-only and subject to weather and tides.
Are there any facilities on Vlasoff Cay?
None. No toilets, shade, water, bins or shops. Bring everything you need and take all rubbish with you.
Can you camp or stay overnight on Vlasoff Cay?
No. It is a day-visit sand cay only. Overnight stays are not practical or permitted in the normal sense for visitors.
Is Vlasoff Cay good for snorkelling?
Yes. Healthy fringing reef and coral gardens with tropical fish, turtles and rays are accessible directly from the sand in clear conditions.
When are marine stingers present?
November to May. Stinger suits are recommended in that period (often supplied on helicopter tours).
Does the cay disappear at high tide?
Yes. It is tide-dependent — more exposed at low tide and can partially or largely disappear at high tide. Operators time landings accordingly.
Can you reserve the cay?
No. It is a public sand cay and cannot be booked exclusively. If another aircraft or a boat is already on the sand, the helicopter is not allowed to land. You then get an extended reef scenic instead.
Is this the same as Michaelmas Cay?
No. Michaelmas is the nearby boat-accessible bird cay. Most large Cairns reef boats do not stop at Vlasoff.
