Boathaven Beach FAQs

Is there a stinger net at Boathaven Beach?

Yes. The Boathaven Beach stinger net is Whitsunday Regional Council’s ocean enclosure at Port of Airlie. It is the town’s main netted ocean swim and is typically in place November to May. It reduces the risk from larger box jellyfish. It does not stop small Irukandji. Do not treat the net as 100 percent protection. Wear a stinger suit if you want extra cover. Airlie Beach Lagoon stays the fully stinger-free swim.

Are dogs allowed at Boathaven Beach?

Yes, with strict hours. Official dog friendly Boathaven Beach off-leash time is 5.30am to 8.30am daily. Stay outside the stinger-net enclosure and 10 metres either side of it. Dogs are not allowed inside the net at any time. Outside the morning window, dogs are on-leash. All-day off-leash sand is the eastern end of Shingley Beach, not this beach.

Are there toilets and facilities?

Yes. Public toilets and an outdoor shower sit beside the reserve. Shade on the sand is poor, so bring an umbrella. Pack water and food, or walk to the cafes at Port of Airlie. There is no 4WD access and no sand camping on this beach.

Where do I park for Boathaven Beach?

Boathaven Beach parking is the small public reserve car park on The Beacons at Port of Airlie, plus nearby Port of Airlie bays. Council’s foreshore plan records about 10 parks on the beach reserve. It is a 2-minute drive or a 10-minute sealed walk from Airlie Beach main street. Read signs. Do not block marina or ferry traffic.

Can you swim at Boathaven Beach all year?

You can enter the water year-round in calm conditions, but the Boathaven Beach stinger net is the high-season protection, typically November to May. Outside that window stinger risk is lower, not zero. The beach is unpatrolled. No daily lifeguard service. Swim inside the enclosure when the net is in. Do not swim outside the net in stinger season.
