Airlie Beach is the mainland base for the Whitsundays: a free freshwater lagoon on the foreshore, Saturday markets on the sand, and daily boats to Whitehaven and the reef leaving from Port of Airlie, Coral Sea Marina and Shute Harbour. Stay in town for the swim, the walk to the tour desks, and the restaurants and bars along the esplanade once the boats are back.

🏊Airlie Beach Lagoon

🏊 Airlie Beach lagoon — Free 4,300 sqm freshwater lagoon on the foreshore, about 4.5 million litres of self-chlorinated water.
👶 Family Pools — Toddler wading area, children’s pool to 1.5 m, main pool to 2 m with swim lanes.
🛡️ Stinger Safe — Enclosed freshwater, so this is the year-round swim when the ocean has marine stingers from November to May.
🚩 Lifeguards — Standard hours are 5:30am to 7:00pm September to April and 5:30am to 6:00pm May to August. Council has been running shorter hours while new lights are installed, so check Whitsunday Regional Council on the day.
🚻 On Site — Toilets, showers, change rooms, bottle refill, picnic grass, BBQs and wheelchair access including a pool hoist.

🐶Dog Friendly Rules at Airlie Beach

🚫 Main Foreshore and Lagoon — Dogs prohibited inside the lagoon and within 10 m of playgrounds and BBQs.
🐕 Shingley Beach Eastern End — Off-leash all day. Rocky sand beside Coral Sea Marina.
⏰ Boathaven Beach — Off-leash 5:30am to 8:30am only, outside the stinger-net enclosure. On-leash at all other times.
🚶 Bicentennial Walkway — On-leash from the lagoon to Cannonvale Beach.
🏞️ Bicentennial Park Cannonvale — Nearest fenced off-leash park with full facilities.

Airlie Beach offers excellent facilities and services for visitors:

🌞 Best Time to Visit

☀️ May to October — Drier, lower humidity. Best stretch for island tours and walking.
🪼 November to May — Marine stingers in the ocean. Swim in the lagoon instead.
🐋 June to October — Humpback whales offshore on the migration.
🌡️ Year-round — Town stays open. Winter nights are still warm enough for the esplanade.

🗺️ Airlie Beach Parking

🅿️ Airlie Beach parking — Paid bays sit at the lagoon, Broadwater Avenue, Coconut Grove and the Whitsunday Sailing Club. Many meters use EasyPark. 🏨 Town Centre — Airlie Beach Hotel car park is a paid all-day option in the middle of the strip.
🆓 Longer Free Bays — Waterson Way beside Woolworths and the overflow car park behind Woolworths. No camping in those bays.
🚢 Tour Days — Port of Airlie and Coral Sea Marina have separate paid lots if you are leaving a car for a boat trip.
⏰ Saturday Tip — Markets fill the foreshore parks first. Arrive before 8am or use Waterson Way and walk.

✈️Getting There

🚗 Drive — Shute Harbour Road is the main strip. About 620 km south of Cairns. About 150 km and 2 hours north of Mackay via the Bruce Highway and Proserpine.
✈️ Airport — Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine is about 39 km. Whitsunday Transit, shuttles and taxis run into town.
🚌 Coaches — Greyhound and Premier Motor Service stop in the town centre. Local buses link the airport, Cannonvale, Airlie and Shute Harbour.
🛥️ Boat Bases — Port of Airlie for many ferries and cruise tenders. Coral Sea Marina for sailing. Shute Harbour for some island transfers.

💡 Local Tips

🏊 Swim Here — Use the lagoon. The open bay in front of town is not a flagged surf beach.
🚤 Book Boats Early — Whitehaven and reef seats sell out in the dry season.
🐢 Wildlife — Turtles and dolphins show in the bay. Whales are a boat or lookout sighting in winter, not a beach guarantee.
🍹 Sunset — Coral Sea Marina precinct is the easy waterfront drinks walk from town.
📝 Hours Change — Confirm lagoon close time with Council if you are aiming for a late swim.

🏝️ Whitsunday Islands — Day boats and overnight yachts leave from this town.
🏖️ Whitehaven Beach — Silica sand on Whitsunday Island. Boat, seaplane or helicopter only.
